Adam is focused on the intersection of physical systems and computer control. His work has included engine control electronics for custom race cars, robotics, electric motor control, machine learning control for near-chaotic engine combustion. Adam earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and masters and bachelors degrees under full scholarship from The Cooper Union in New York City.
Prior to Nelumbo, Dave spent eight years in research and development, and engineering management roles for Cobalt Technologies, an international renewable chemicals and biofuels company. He spent over 10 years leading research teams in biosensing, power, and energy at the Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center. David holds a B.S. in materials science & engineering and B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from UC Berkeley.
David Bierman completed his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at MIT. There, he and team member Prof. Andrej Lenert (University of Michigan) developed a novel solar thermophotovoltaic converter that is capable of harnessing the entire solar spectrum for power generation. Their research helped revitalize the field and established the current world record for solar-to-electrical conversion efficiency for this technology.
Jessica Morrison began developing micromirror-based lighting architectures while earning a Ph.D. in physics from Boston University. After graduating in 2016, she worked as a postdo in the Lighting Enabled Systems and Applications (LESA) NSF Engineering Research Center, where she focused on dynamic free-space optical communications using microelectromechanical systems. She also holds a B.S. in physics from the University of Cincinnati.
Joe Geddes Founder, Photia
Joe founded Photia to enable rapid manufacturing of advanced materials for energy applications using holographic lithography. Prior to Photia, Joe was an engineer at the company Rolith, where he made key contributions to the development of Rolling Mask Lithography, a method for making two-dimensional nanostructured coatings. He earned his Ph.D. in engineering science and mechanics from Penn State.
Lance received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University in 2014. Following his doctorate work he was a visiting scholar at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and, most recently, a postdoc at a joint venture between UC Berkeley and the National University of Singapore. There, he led a research and development and manufacturing teams to reinvent the air conditioner for efficient operation in tropical climates.
Lauren holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota. She has extensive experience in optics, nanofabrication, and materials, and has built devices including sensors, solar cells, and hard drive heads. Laminera is developing industrial manufacturing methods for synthetic metals, with applications in energy and digital memory. Lauren also holds B.S. and B.A. degrees in physics and mathematics from Bethel University in St. Paul, MN.
Sarah earned a B.S. in biology from the University of Maryland in 2004 and a Ph.D. in human genetics and molecular biology from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2011. As Chief Scientific Officer of Microbyre she leads the construction of genomic toolkits for non-model prokaryotes. Trained in both computational and molecular biology, she brings a unique perspective on the emerging technologies enabled by “synthetic” biology.
Supriya holds bachelors and masters degrees in physics from the University of Oxford, a masters degree in atomic physics and a Ph.D. in engineering physics from the University of Virginia, and professional qualifications in business and finance from University of California, San Diego. In 2015 Supriya was elected to SPIE Senior Member for distinction and honors in optics and photonics. She was listed on SPIE’s 2016 Women in Optics.
Vince received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from U.C. Berkeley, with a focus on heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and energy & resources. Prior to Cyclotron Road, he was a mechanical engineer and research scientist at Otherlab where he was the project lead on a hybrid solar photovoltaic and thermal system. Prior to Otherlab, Vince worked with Abengoa Research on advanced heat transfer fluids, properties, and chemistries.
Andrew is an expert in electrochemistry, materials science, and characterization. During his Ph.D., Andrew developed novel graphene-TiO2 anodes for Li-ion batteries. As a postdoc, Andrew led two ARPA-E funded projects and co-invented Feasible’s ultrasonic battery analysis technology. Andrew holds a Ph.D. in chemical and materials engineering from Princeton University and a B.S. in chemical and biomolecular engineering from UCLA.
Barry is an expert in hardware-software interfaces. During his Ph.D, he designed and built automated systems for materials synthesis and reactive spray deposition of battery electrodes. He has also built automated rigs for electrochemical testing and custom software for image and data analysis. He holds a Ph.D. from The City College of New York and a B.S. from the University of Buffalo, both in chemical engineering.
Chris has a breadth of operational experience and expertise, specifically in intellectual property and finance. Chris was the principle investigator and directed research and operations for Mallinda’s successfully completed 2016 Phase I NSF SBIR award. He holds a Ph.D. in molecular and cell biology from UC Berkeley and an M.B.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Colin published seminal papers on perovskite tandem solar cells with his academic adviser Michael McGehee during graduate school. He has won numerous awards for his work and efforts to commercialize this technology, most recently being named to the Forbes 30 under 30 in Energy and to the inaugural Slavin fellowship. He holds a Ph.D. in materials science from Stanford and a B.S in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M.
Peter has devoted the last 10 years to advanced materials R&D. His background in self-assembly and hybrid organic/inorganic materials gives him a unique skill set for tackling long-standing energy storage problems. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Würzburg and holds a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of British Columbia and a B.Sc. in chemistry from Idaho State University.
Philip's graduate work laid the foundation for Mallinda’s novel thermosets and composites, which won the New Venture Challenge at the University of Colorado in 2014. He was the entrepreneurial lead for Mallinda in the NSF’s I-Corps program. Prior to graduate school, Philip worked for three years in new product R&D at Avery Dennison. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado and a B.S. from UC Santa Cruz, both in chemistry.
Richard worked as a graduate student under Prof. Yi Cui at Stanford University for the past four years. As a student, he managed a team of over 15 students on the SCI-Arc/Caltech Solar Decathlon team and advised the Stanford Solar Decathlon team to compete in the DOE’s solar-powered house competition. He holds a Ph.D. in materials science from Stanford and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Caltech.
Zachary has been developing fundamental synthetic biology technologies since 2006. His graduate work on a cell-free prototyping environment forms the basis for Synvitrobio. Zachary is a NDSEG Fellow, a DARPA Rising participant, and part of the UCLA/Caltech NIH Medical Scientist Training Program. He holds a Ph.D. in biology from Caltech, an A.B. in chemical and physical biology from Harvard, and is a M.D. candidate (on leave) at UCLA.
Ilan founded Cyclotron Road to bridge a gap he observed in energy technology innovation over the past decade. Before launching the program, he served as Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). At ARPA-E, he managed a $50 million portfolio of advanced R&D projects in the areas of energy storage, solar energy, and advanced materials. He was also a senior advisor and cofounder of ARPA-E's Technology-to-Market program, aimed at maximizing the commercial and societal impact of the agency's breakthrough R&D portfolio. Prior to ARPA-E, Ilan launched two venture-backed clean energy startups based on advanced materials and novel manufacturing approaches. He holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in materials science and engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Dane Boysen Managing Director, Technology and Mentorship
Dane is dedicated to mentoring our cohort teams through critical technology challenges. Prior to Cyclotron Road, he was Executive Director of Research Operations at the Gas Technology Institute (GTI). Before GTI, he served as a Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), where he managed over $100 million spread over 30 of the nation’s most cutting-edge energy technology research and development projects. Prior to joining ARPA-E, Boysen led an $11 million project to develop liquid metal batteries for grid-scale energy storage under Professor Don Sadoway at MIT. This work led to the founding of the venture-backed start-up Ambri. In 2004, Boysen co-founded Superprotonic Inc., a venture capital-backed start-up developing solid acid electrolyte-based fuel cells. Boysen received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science at Caltech.

Matt Price Managing Director, Partnerships
Before joining Cyclotron Road, Matt was a Vice President at Enlighted Inc. the leading wireless sensor network and lighting controls manufacturer for commercial and industrial buildings. Prior to joining Enlighted in 2011, Matt was a Principal at Nth Power, where he led investments in a broad range of energy and cleantech areas including materials and nanotechnology, fuel cells, biofuels, advanced lighting, and smart grid technologies. Matt is Kauffman Fellow and received his M.B.A. from the Haas School of Business at U.C. Berkeley. While at Haas, he co-founded the Berkeley Energy Resource Collaborative (BERC). He holds a B.S. in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University.

Jeff Anderson Managing Director, Operations
Jeff has extensive experience in creating and growing organizations that accelerate the adoption of clean energy technologies. Prior to joining Cyclotron Road, he was a Managing Director of CalCEF, where he focused on programs to organize and scale innovation ecosystems. He also served as the founding President of CalCharge, a groundbreaking public-private consortium to catalyze the deployment of new energy storage technologies. Jeff is a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Sustainable Energy. He holds a Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from Columbia University, a Master of Laws degree in Environmental and Energy law (LL.M.) from Pace University School of Law, and a law degree (J.D.) from Thomas M. Cooley School of Law. As an undergraduate, he attended Michigan State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in international relations.
Sebastien Lounis Co-founder and Managing Director, Communications
Sebastien joined Ilan to launch Cyclotron Road in July 2014 and has been deeply involved in building and growing the program since its inception. Prior to Cyclotron Road, he completed a Ph.D. in applied science and technology at U.C. Berkeley, where he studied the interaction of nanomaterials with light. While at Berkeley, he was co-president of the Berkeley Energy and Resources Collaborative (BERC), an organization connecting over 3,000 students, faculty, and industry members around programing and events related to energy innovation. He also served as Editor in Chief of the Berkeley Science Review, where he led a team of writers, editors, and designers telling stories about breakthrough research coming out of the university. Sebastien also holds B.S. degrees in physics and philosophy from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Nicole Systrom Managing Director, Development
Nicole is passionate about growing support for early stage clean technology innovators and facilitating investments for climate impact. In her roles at Cyclotron Road, PRIME Coalition, and as a member of the Energy Foundation's Board of Directors, Nicole develops programs to increase the capacity of foundations, family offices, and seed investors to support ventures that mitigate climate change and contribute to a more sustainable energy system, with both charitable and for-profit investment dollars. She has published work on facets of clean energy ranging from gaps in the hard technology innovation ecosystem to state energy policy. Nicole earned an MBA/M.S. in Environment and Resources from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a B.S. in Earth Systems, also from Stanford University.

Beth Zotter Techonomics
Beth has a decade of experience developing the technical and market potential of new energy technologies. Before joining Cyclotron Road, Beth was an R&D manager for BAL, Inc., a bioenergy venture supported by ARPA-e and DuPont. She has worked with a number of energy startups to design technology cost and performance models to guide business and R&D strategy, and has helped federal manufacturing programs evaluate investments in R&D project portfolios. Beth has an M.S. in energy and resources from U.C. Berkeley and a B.A. from Harvard.

Melanie Miller Laboratory Operations
Melanie has been providing operational support to scientific programs at Berkeley Lab for over 10 years. She manages and organizes a diverse array of business services including event coordination, travel, procurement and HR. Before joining Cyclotron Road, she was part of the Materials Sciences Division operations team and worked with the Helios SERC and JCAP programs. Melanie has also supported an undergraduate lab internship program, directed youth art and recreation programs, and worked as a special education teacher. She holds a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Brenna Krieger Program Operations
Brenna is committed to directing and increasing the efficiency of program operations. Prior to Cyclotron Road, she was an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). During her two-year fellowship, she was a project manager for the Clean Energy Manufacturing Initiative and Technology-to-Market Program where she spearheaded an effort called Build4Scale to develop manufacturing training for hardware innovators. Brenna has a PhD in Biophysics from Harvard and a BS in Physics from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

Nikhil Gargeya Partnerships
Prior to joining Cyclotron Road, Nikhil spent 3 years with Siemens TTB (now next47), a corporate venturing organization, where he worked on strategic engagements with startups touching energy and industry verticals. Nikhil holds a B.S. in environmental science from the College of Natural Resources (CNR) at U.C. Berkeley. He stays involved in local efforts through work with solar non-profit GRID Alternatives, the local Young Professionals in Energy (YPE) chapter, and the CNR alumni board.
Mateo Jaramillo, Entrepreneur-in-Residence
Mateo is working with the Cyclotron Road team to define a new EIR program while while he explores new projects in the electric power sector. Prior to Cyclotron Road, Mateo was VP of Products and Programs for Tesla Energy at Tesla Motors, where he was responsible for policy, business development, and product management for the company's grid connected energy storage products. Prior to Tesla, Mateo was Chief Operating Officer and part of the founding team at Gaia Power Technologies, a pioneering distributed energy storage firm. He has an AB in economics from Harvard and a masters in theology from Yale. He is a member of the 2016 Class of Henry Crown Fellows and the Aspen Global Leadership Network at the Aspen Institute.
