Activation Energy supports the world’s top science innovators in bridging the gap from concepts to products that can benefit humanity. As co-managers of the Cyclotron Road entrepreneurial fellowship program, we have supported 42 science entrepreneurs since 2015, leading to 30 new hard tech companies that have attracted more than $80 million in early-stage funding from best-in-class investors and corporations. Thanks to a multi-year grant from a major donor, we aim to expand our program offering to new geographies and impact areas in 2019.

Position Summary
The CTO will serve as Managing Director for a new program office in Boston and primary advisor for our growing community of fellows working in the field of advanced microsystems. She or he will provide leadership to the Activation Energy team and external stakeholders across academia, industry, finance, and government as we work to create the world’s leading platform to support the commercial application of hard science and technology.

The CTO will be hired as a full time employee of Activation Energy with competitive salary and full benefits and will report to the CEO.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to executive team and Leadership Council in design and management of the world’s leading support program for hard tech innovators and entrepreneurs.

  • Serve as Managing Director of a new program office and community of fellows based in or around Boston, MA.

  • Be the primary technical entrepreneurship advisor for fellows operating in the field of advanced microsystems.

  • Oversee core elements of our innovator support program, including review and selection of fellows, goal setting, advisory board formation, 1:1 mentorship, and quarterly board meetings.

  • Represent the organization and build partnerships with key public and private sector stakeholders from across the technology innovation ecosystem.

The Ideal Candidate…

  • Has a minimum of 10 years experience in research, development, management, and commercialization of microsystem-based technology, with entrepreneurial experience as founder or leader of a new company, product line, or business unit

  • Has led high-performance technical teams, and demonstrated a commitment to nurturing talent through mentorship

  • Has debated the merits of venture capital as a source of capital for early-stage hard technology companies, and is supportive of a broad range of finance and business models for advancing hard tech to market

  • Has a strong network and top-notch reputation among stakeholders from across the technology innovation ecosystem (academia, industry, finance, and government)

  • Feels like the world's scientific and entrepreneurial talent should be focused on more serious pursuits than dog-walking apps
