Cyclotron Road congratulates Cuberg on Opening of a New Facility
The Cyclotron Road team congratulates Cuberg, a former fellowship company, on their opening of a new facility in the Bay Area on Monday, February 26. Berkeley Lab Deputy Laboratory Director for Research Carol Burns and members of the Cyclotron Road team attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony. U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and David Hochschild of the California Energy Commission were keynote speakers.
As the first U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program (LEEP), Cyclotron Road gives innovators the knowledge, resources, and connections they need to translate research into impact. Cuberg Co-Founder and Cyclotron Road fellow Richard Wang benefited from access to Berkeley Lab facilities, a rich research environment, and entrepreneurial mentoring that's provided to all fellows in partnership with Activate.

In 2021, European battery manufacturer Northvolt acquired the U.S.-based battery technology company Cuberg, Inc., with Wang leading the company until February 2024.
Cuberg develops lithium metal batteries that offer improvements in performance, safety, and thermal durability. These next-generation batteries could significantly improve the range of Northvolt’s electric-vehicle batteries, which are currently being used by auto companies such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Scania.
The DOE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) and the Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) are the founding and anchor sponsors of the program. Other partners supporting the program include the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) with the State of California, the California Energy Commission (CEC), the DOE Building Technologies Office (BTO), the DOE Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO), the Federal Emergency Management Program (FEMP), The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and Activate.
